How to Play Blue Moon Solitaire — Rules

Rules

Blue Moon Solitaire is played with one deck of 52 cards. The goal is to arrange all cards into four rows, one for each suit, from twos to Kings.

  1. Setup First, deal all 52 cards face up into four rows of 13 cards each. Then move all Aces to the left of each row, creating the fourteenth column. This also creates four gaps.

  2. Gameplay You can move a card into an empty space (gap) if it’s the same suit and one higher in rank than the card to its immediate left. You can’t place any cards to the right of King.

If there are no more moves possible, you can reshuffle the cards that aren’t in their correct sequences and deal them into each row leaving one space after each completed sequence. You can reshuffle only twice (3 times in relaxed version).

  1. Winning The game is won when all cards are arranged in their respective rows in ascending order (Ace to King) and by suit.

  2. Variations

The most popular variant is “Montana Solitaire”. The only difference is that the removed Aces are discarded, so there are only 13 columns, with gaps. All rules are the same, except for you should start each row with 2 instead of Ace.

Variants

  • Blue Moon (relaxed) — One extra redeal.
